Youth Radio/Youth Media International is a Peabody Award-winning youth-driven converged media production company that delivers the best youth news and culture and undiscovered talent to a cross section of audiences. Youthradio.org is a participatory news space where young reporters publish original content, including writing, audio, photo, and video directly to the website from anywhere in the world. Affiliated with 90.5 WRTE-FM Chicago and the National Museum of Mexican Art, Radio Arte is a Latino-owned, bilingual, youth-driven public radio station that works to advance the voices of a multi-layered society. Through socially conscious journalism, media-literacy training and programming, Radio Arte strives to showcase music, issues, events, and community forums that are representative of Mexican/Latino culture.  It also provides professional skills and leadership training for youth and adults.

The mission of The Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program (AZYEP) is to develop leadership, multiculturalism and identity by providing training and opportunity to youth in community broadcasting.  The organization partners with KDNK Community Radio to broadcast weekly youth radio programs in English and Spanish and teach an accredited high school radio broadcasting class covering broadcasting, interviewing, public speaking and audio production.

In the media program, youth explore the power of communication. Program participants develop and strengthen their unique voices through hands-on training in photography, radio, and video. Youth craft their own stories and gain the skills to think critically about popular culture and media.

Sample Media Classes

Funky Photo Youth using photographs as a starting point you will create collaged images by adding writing, paint or drawing.

Photography Youth learn to use a 35mm camera and print their black & white photos in the darkroom.

Photoshop In this class youth learn to manipulate and change images on the computer into works of art or just plain fun.

Radio This class is for youth who have an opinion to share and need a place to be heard. Youth work as a team to develop a theme and produce their own radio shows.

Video Production Youth learn how to plan a production and storyboard their ideas. Youth learn camera basics and shoot the script. Finally, youth bring all the pieces together in the editing stage.
